Biography
R.L. (Arlin) Geyer
Robert Lindsay Geyer has been making photographs since age 10, when his grandfather allowed him to use a Polaroid camera during family gatherings.
After finishing high school, Geyer studied photography with several New York- and Boston-based photographers, after which he worked in the medium from Maine to Arizona. He has exhibited widely in Connecticut and New York, taught photography in a photography school, a high school and a college, and written photography criticism for several art journals.
After working in photography full-time for a few years, Geyer returned to college to earn a degree in philosophy, with a concentration in aesthetics. He wrote papers on subjects such as perception and the aesthetic experience, the fallacy of objectivity in photography, and the art exhibit as a work of art. He taught photography while attending college.
Life's path forked and Geyer put his cameras away for more than a decade. During that time he became heavily involved in many aspects of computers. When his job as Information Systems Manager for a publishing and training company exposed him to Adobe Photoshop, his love of photography was rekindled.
Today Geyer lives in Asheville, North Carolina and photographs exclusively with digital equipment, using Photoshop as a bridge between camera and vision. He is a professor of art at Warren Wilson College, teaching digital image manipulation, as well as the sole proprietor of Aesthetic Endeavors.
